In the context of klezmer music (generally created in Eastern Europe), the term
“Oriental” generally referred not to Japan
or China but rather to Near Eastern countries such as Turkey. (Indeed, some klezmer melodies are categorized as “terkishers”.) This melody, like Yiddish Tanz, (see below), is derived from a recording by violinist Max Leibowitz in the early 20th century.
