This tune was recorded by the cymbalist Joseph Moscowitz in 1916. The cymbalom (a/k/a “tsimbal”) is a close cousin of the hammered dulcimer that is well known to fans of British Isles and American folk music. Not long after he emigrated to the U.S., the Romanian-born Moscowitz toured the U.S. to rave reviews. Indeed, when Moscowitz was coming to perform in New York City’s Lower East Side in 1908, the NY Times reported that “posters in Yiddish, Italian, Hungarian, and Roumanian announce his presence throughout the length of East Houston Street.””
